We are just weaning off the 3rd litter of feral kitten that have been brought to us this summer. This one has been the healthiest. The first litter had been abandoned by mom 3 days before we got them. I had another neighbor call me last week with an orphaned feral kitten that was sick. I sent her to the vet to be cared for like your animal control does. We are in a tiny town and lucky to have a dog catcher, he takes them to a vet to either be adopted or put down. He never picks up cats though. The heat and drought we're having here is my guess to why so many abandoned kittens this year. It's hard work but getting them caught young, tamed, and fixed is a start on keeping down the feral population. We tried catching a young one several years ago that slept with our ducks. We named it Duckie. Duckie is a female, keeps having kittens, and she and her kittens still evade all our traps. I had to cat proof the chick pens because of her. I keep trying. One of these days she'll slip up and I'll get her.
Good luck with the little one Cathryn!
