We got an Americauna straight run last March and ended up with five out of seven roosters. Last week things came to a head where two of the boys were challenging me (!?!) when I brought feed and two were getting chased and beat up. The other boy stayed out of the middle when the others were brawling. The girls cuddled up to him, calm and quiet.
The bus arrived last Saturday and the brawling boys went off to freezer camp. Sandy, my brown feathered lover boy, remains. The girls are all cooing and everyone seems much happier.
When Sandy was young, he would sit quietly beside me, grooming my shirt tail. the other boys would peck about at my boots or pant legs or try to roost on me. I set some ground rules but it became apparent that I would have to keep an eye on them. As they got older, they became more and more like some unruly teenagers. Meanwhile, Sandy would gently preen the girls and present them with tasty bits.
keep the lovers, not the fighters and peace will rule your roost.
