HI Scott, I would make up the sulfadimethoxine and hand feed her the water with the med, with a spoon, in small amounts at a time. I'd also hand feed her. She is very close to death and needs food in her. You can feed her tiny bits of dog food, chicken feed mixed with yogurt or something else that will make it stick together in small balls. If you feed pelleted feed, you can feed her the pellets. Plan on this taking quite a bit of time and doing it at least 3 times a day. In between feeding, offer her favorite chicken foods, grains & dry oatmeal with a little bit of grit, boiled egg, water melon, anything you can think of that will entice her to eat, line up the dishes in front of her. I keep cockatiel Exact on hand because the bright colors always tempt chickens to eat. Time is not on your side. There is a good chance you can save her. If you have ivermectim, I would put two small drops on her backside too.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Sick Hen :(
Hi all,
I have a 4 year old Red Star hen who I noticed yesterday had a droopy comb and was not hanging out and foraging with the flock. When I picked her up, she was light as a feather (compared to the others of her breed/size) and seemed very weak. She spent last night in a box in the foyer and is happy to be hand fed things like bread soaked in milk. I imaging she's been sick for a while to have gotten this skinny - I feel awful that I haven't noticed. The weather has certainly been wonky but the others haven't missed a beat. She's pooping small, but normal poops so I did a quick fecal (I have sheep so I've done hundreds over the years) and I didn't see any worm eggs or cocci. Are there other worms of concern that wouldn't show up in a fecal test? If so, how would I treat? I have Wazine and all the sheep wormers you can think of :)
Should I just keep giving her supportive care or should I be doing something more, like a broad spectrum antibiotic? I have sulfadimethoxine powder and a bunch of injectables on hand (LA200, Nuflor, Pen...) but would have no clue as to how to dose a chicken...
Any advice would be so appreciated. She's an awfully sweet chicken. Right now she's hanging out in the shade with our barn chicken...sort of pecking around but not with much enthusiasm.
Take care,
Alisa
