I still have the various "grabbers" my parents got after they were less able to reach for things--the sort that has a trigger grip on one end, and two "fingers" with soft plastic "cups" to hold the thing being picked up.  I would think that might work.  They come in various lengths, and can be gotten at many drug stores or any place that sells hospital or handicap/mobility supplies.
 
Thanks for the heads-up.  <g> And I thought I was just saving those grabbers for my older years...
