When mine are old enough to free range, I let them out and say, “have at it!”. As long as the roosters behave, they can stay. Now, having said that, I just had four butchered because I had too many and they were overbreeding my girls and making them bald. Right now, I still have four standard sized (NH RED, Cuckoo Maran, Partridge Cochin and Golden Laced Polish) and four bantams that are Americauna X. I haven’t counted the Silkies or Game chickens….they don’t free range and are penned.
In the past, I have given them away and if I found someone who wanted a roo, I’d sell for $5 or give away before butchering……but very few people want them.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Chicks to hens and roosters. When and what.
Good day!
I have my chicks that are growning like weeds!!
I am not sure when I can tell which are roos and hens. They were born in April. I know I cannot have that ma ny roosters too keep. I have some that I thought was hens now look like roosters. They are just a mix hatched out from the neighbor, so they do not look alike. I noticed an occasional sore eye and assume it's from some picking on each other. At what age should I be able to tell the difference and when should they be thinned out? I do not know what I will do with the roos I do not keep. What do you do with yours?
I may also want to add they free range.
