We had a situation like this years back with raccoon. She would go into our rafters and have her babies every spring then leave and back same time next year!
So we put out a trap. It would be locked and empty. We thought holy crap how big is that coon!!!!! So we slowly moved it closer to the patio door so we could hear it. Sure enough that night we heard the pop! Turned on the light and before I could get my shoes on she was gone! Its was the david copper field of raccoons! So next night same thing! So we sat and just watched her. She got her nose under the door and pushed as hard and she could wiggle and poof she was gone! So the next night we waited with a dog kennel and when the trap snapped we put the whole deal in a large dog kennel. No more raccoon.
Maybe you have the copper field of possums?

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Problem, please help
This has probably been covered before, haven't been on much, so I apologize for asking it again.
I have a possum problem. Got six of my chickens a couple of weeks ago. I have been sitting outside all night guarding ever since. I have also installed a spotlight as I know they don't like light.
Was able to borrow a large live trap. First night I set it, caught a young possum. Next two nights - food gone, trap locked and empty. I think she is big enough to keep the door from locking. I place the food at the far end but the dish is empty in the morning. Don't want to use poison as I'm sure I would catch a cat - also wouldn't know if she was really gone.
Any ideas please? This is a big trap - a little one I can see her keeping the door from locking, but I can't see how she can reach the food, spring the trap and still get out.
Thanks for any help.
