Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Guardian of Livestock..help

I've been trying to find a Great Pyr, but I'd prefer a smaller dog breed as I mostly I guess I need to find out how you train a dog to protect chickens. I realize that there are breeds more given to this instinct than others. And I know that some dogs do not have it in them...I currently have a Caanan dog that is only interested in eating the hens, though he's technically a herding breed. The other dog, a Meximation  (Dalmatian mix from Mexico) is fine around hens but will not protect them. Where/how does one find training for LGDs?

I have a 10 pound poodle, a golden retriever and an anatolian shepherd. All three will go to bat for the chickens/turkeys/guineas/peacocks/geese/ducks ...

My Anatolian was raised with the birds, horses, cows and pigs ... she will guard them all. Matter of fact she just got back from chasing a coyote off the back 80. It wasn't always easy raising her to 'guard' the chickens, we lost a few to taste and play, but she got over that with alot of patience and training. Plus, she discovered that squirrels were WAY MORE FUN to stalk and chase.

My Golden is a rescue from a big city, and I know he never had livestock experience as a youngster .. but he sure will go after any scent or sight he catches. He treed a raccoon the other night and took off after the coyote this morning too.

My Poodle tends to be more of a protector of the house and yard and will chase the geese and ducks back to their pond. Or the pigs out of the yard. He doesn't much care about the chickens. He also took out after the coyote this morning - but doesn't have the speed to keep up with the 'big dogs'.

Good luck with whatever dog you decide to go with !!!
