Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Chicken coops for renters

Yesterday driving to the feed store I had to brake for a rooster chasing a hen across the street. This was a first fowl sighting in the very suburban neighborhood near our canyon. While at the feed store, around 3pm, I could hear a rooster crowing. When I mentioned it to the cashier she said it crowed "ALL of the time." I've been wondering about the wisdom of keeping roosters myself. I have a few young roos now, and some broodies incubating eggs. I wanted to keep a couple of roosters myself but I guess there's no way of knowing how noisy any given roo is going to be beforehand. I already have a bobwhite calling at 5:30-6:00am and no one has complained. I don't have any close neighbors here, three of the four sides of our property open onto acres and acres of raw land, but also I'm not in the pissing off the neighbors business.Sometimes people move into a place like this, then seek to change everything. People have recently posted a complaint about the
"feral" peacocks making too much noise, and asking for residents to keep the coyotes from making so much noise at night...

Another word on the crowing.  They don't just crow at 4 a.m.  Here there are lots of chickens and roosters.  We frequently had our rooster crowing at midnight, 1 am talking to the rooster up the street.  We have awesome neighbors who politely mentioned in the summer they like to keep their windows open.  Our rooster was dinner.  Roosters are loud at any time.  Angela
