RE: [CHICKENS-101] Re: another sick hen

> I'm sure she got the sulmet. We lost a hen a few weeks ago and another
hen was acting sick. That's why we started them on sulmet. She does seem
to be better today. She finally started eating. We will keep a close eye
on her.

just off the top of my head, I think Sulmet can be kidney toxic, so
drinking is a good thing, can you get her some water melon, apple sauce and
other stuff to get some more fluids into her? It won't hurt and if her
kidneys need flushing it might help.

> Can you recommend some vitamins? We haven't been giving them any. I
asked at the store where we get our feed and the clerk said we didn't need
to supplement with the feed we use. Thanks for your help!

I think for the most part the feed is okay to supply them with what they
need, but I wouldn't always count on that. I have used a variety of things
from mixing some red cell into a mash of their chicken feed soaked in water
to adding vitamin/electrolyte preparations into their drinking water. The
one I have is called Vitamins and Electrolytes Plus from AgriLabs and I get
it at Jeffers. It is salt based, so not something to use much of or to use
often as salt is a problem for chickens if they get too much, but it's
labeled for poultry. I just put a quarter or a teaspoon in a 2 gallon
waterer. There is close to 120 grams in the package and it's for 128
gallons, so just about a gram per gallon. If you want to get fancy, you can
take a 1000 mg capsule of vitamin C or MSM and empty it and use the capsule
to measure the vitamin supplement.
