Hi Cathryn, I am sure that there are people who have raised quail under
many conditions that worked. I don't think any two bird keepers have exactly the same set up unless they both bought their equipment from the same manufacturers and even then there are going to be other differences.
With Button quail it is advisable to leave the male with his mate because they usually nest in an aviary full of all kinds of finches, canaries, and possibly different types of hook bills and the pair need to have as much protection as can be provided their offspring under the circumstances to raise their babies to adulthood.
The most enjoyable way to keep a few quail is in an aviary with lots of natural food plants growing there. I have seen them in both indoor and outdoor aviaries in a somewhat natural setting and it is relaxing to see them interacting with their offspring. A pair of nesting diamond doves added to the setting and maybe a pair of Mandarin ducks and you have the makings of your own colorful mini zoo.
I will agree that it is more enjoyable to raise quail from incubator to adulthood being imprinted by their care taker. I have noticed that when quail are raised in a secure and quiet environment, free of predators, sudden loud noises, and not crowded, you seldom ever see one feather picked or with a scalped head. Dean

Dean, My quail laid and sat, but the males need to be removed in pen situations, at least from my experience. Personally, I found the incubator and handling/imprinting the quail a much more fun experience.
