For eggs, Black Sex Links aka Black Stars are fantastic layers. Very gentle birds. My first hens were BS. I had more eggs than I knew what to do with their first winter.
I'm down to only one now of the original flock. She's going on 5 now. And has been a good broody hen, even tho "they aren't supposed to be broody". I had 2 roosters with mine after finding a 6ft black snake in their house. They breed some pretty mutts.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Hybrids and mating?
While I'm waiting for the library books I need answers. My feed store has "Production RI Reds? and "Black set links" some cross breed brown egg layer. When I called they said these are hybrids.
When reading the McMurray catalog (it's since disappeared into the Black Hole) there was a note about their hybrids that they shouldn't be bred or maybe couldn't be bred, I don't recall.
The thing of it is, I want meat as well as eggs. If I were to buy the hybrid and had a rooster would I get meat chickens or just an ornery rooster. I don't need a 2nd free-loading chicken.
Thanks and confused,
Allen
