RE: [CHICKENS-101] Americanas

Chicks and ducks should not be raised together.  Ducks are sloppy sloppy sloppy and will foul the water.  They also should not be fed medicated food, whereas chicks can be.

It doesn’t matter where you live.  The first week, chicks need to be kept at 90-95 degrees………so, if you are in a warmer climate, you probably can raise that brooder light pretty high during the day.  Each week of age, you can deduct five degrees.  If you days are in the 80’s, you only need a few more weeks of brooding.  Watch the nighttime temps, though.

I love little ducks, but we have no water source here……meaning pond or lake.  I won’t have any water fowl fouling up all the waterers…..especially the troughs.  My friend has ducks and geese and they totally mess up the horse troughs by regurgitating their food into it and of course, floating and crapping into it………yuck!  Goats are picky about their water and would never drink if it was fouled up. (fowled up)

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Americanas

Tractor Supply sent me an email saying its that time of year again, chicks and ducklings for sale. Americanas for $1.99. I tried to resist, but failed. Went there yesterday and came home with 6 Americanas and 2 White Peking ducklings. Last time i did this i ended up with 6 RIR's roosters and 2 hens. You would think i'd have learned something Now I have questions...... can the chicks and ducklings be together? I have a piece of cardboard separating them, but the chicks keep squeezing thru to the other side. Also, how long do they need the heat lamp/light? I'm in Central Florida. This is my first time to have Americanas. Will the roosters be aggressive? I appreciate any information and advice.

Thanks,
