Re: [CHICKENS-101] Americanas

Personal experience. Ducks are stinky, messy, stinky, messy. And if you keep them together you will have wet chicks. Ducklings (yes I've had Pekins) grow faster than chicks. They also need different feed. Ducks cannot have medicated feed given to chickens. Brooder temps are also lower for ducks. I used shelf liner, plastic stuff that comes in a roll, for the bottom of their brooder since it's easy to clean. Soon as a duck eats, it seems to come out the other end.
I brooded Pekins and Call duckling inside (our bathroom) and won't do that again. They are little escape artists.
One of my best roo's was an Americanas. I also have the bantam version and he's a tyrant!

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Americanas

Tractor Supply sent me an email saying its that time of year again, chicks and ducklings for sale. Americanas for $1.99. I tried to resist, but failed. Went there yesterday and came home with 6 Americanas and 2 White Peking ducklings. Last time i did this i ended up with 6 RIR's roosters and 2 hens. You would think i'd have learned something Now I have questions...... can the chicks and ducklings be together? I have a piece of cardboard separating them, but the chicks keep squeezing thru to the other side. Also, how long do they need the heat lamp/light? I'm in Central Florida. This is my first time to have Americanas. Will the roosters be aggressive? I appreciate any information and advice.

Thanks,
Nance
