Melanie, Sorry you didn't get an answer. First off it's a "roost" in the chicken world. The difference is almost academic never the less there is a difference. Your roost can be any height that is convenient. I would keep it under 24 inches unless you provide a ladder. Some folks even set them a few inches off the floor. The best roost is a 2X4 laid flat.
