Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Husbandry

If I offended anyone in agreeing with Susan I apologize. We were all newbies once. I know anyone on here is trying to learn and willing to help anyone that they can once they have experience. I totally appreciate that. On both sides. I used to rescue and saw enough of what unknowledgeable and/or uncaring people ignorantly do to their animals. I believe no one on this list would purposely harm an animal. I think Susan was trying to encourage people to do more research before acquiring an animal species that they know nothing about. Like making sure you have the basics of food, shelter, and a way to give them feed and water.
Please don't let this topic discourage you from asking questions. We're all here to learn and help if we can.

The strength of this list for newbies, like myself, is that we can come here when we panic about something or have a question and often get an immediate response. Plus, we learn from discussions that don't necessarily pertain to us, yet.

Please don't discourage people from asking even basic questions, especially if it will help us become better chicken-keepers. Isn't that the point?

I have the books and I have read them but until you are holding a live chicken that's sick, or notice something is off in the flock, only some of what you read is of immediate value and it can be overwhelming to try and take it all in. Many of you have had chickens for a long while and perhaps you take things for granted a bit. I'm a graphic designer by trade. I was raised around large animals, but until I owned chickens myself, I'd never held one. The learning curve can be a bit daunting.

I believe that people who join lists, like this one, really want to do right by their animals. Sure, it's a lot of the same questions, but for everyone who asks, it's the first time they've needed the information.

You seasoned chicken folks are amazing, and that you are willing to share your knowledge of these feathered poop machines, is a huge gift to newbies. I hope you know how fortunate we are that you're willing to share.
