My normal practice is to dream about what I want ………then I start buying books and reading everything I can online.
BUT, there are mixed messages in books, too. One may recommend one thing and another something entirely different.
What I have found that helps a great deal is to talk (or email) people who have been doing it awhile.
My most recent endeavor is mini dairy goats. Yes, I have several books on raising the goats, making cheese, etc. But what I really like to do is talk with people who actually do it. Their pov on worming, shelters, breeding, etc. I like to hear from them how sales of offspring go and the real differences between registered livestock for sale versus unregistered.
Sometimes I follow the advice and suggestions in books and sometimes I don’t…..depends on the circumstances.
For those that appear to ask questions before doing research, they may just want to hear it out of an experienced person’s mouth. Kind of like preferring a live operator instead of the automated. In any case, if I can help by telling my pov, I will. Mine isn’t necessarily correct………it’s just my way.

I completely agree Susan. There are occasionally things that happen that aren't in the average book. However basic knowledge of health and management is something any responsible animal owner should have. I grew up with poultry and upon getting my first chicks as an adult I still got Storeys guide to chickens and read it cover to cover.
