I've heard horror stories in that regard--box of chicks left out in the hot sun, or out on a loading dock on a cold day--despite box labeling.
 
I can believe it... Just before Christmas I sold a book--buyer never received it, tracking simply stopped after 2 days, and three weeks went by.  The day after I'd refunded the buyer's money, I got the heavy outer envelope back (book had been in bubble wrap and cardboard as well)--not only torn right across the packing tape, but I kid you not, it had TIRE TRACKS on it!!
