I forgot the color part. D'Uccle's and many other smaller breeds bright color breeds that lay a nice medium sized egg would work perfect for you too.

thank you very much for the information, Cathryn... I'll also be looking for breeds with color – as the shed feathers will serve for crafts I do.
I'm a bit of a ways off from being ready to own any chickens right now... just wanted to start researching types and care requirements.
Actually, are there any good starter websites on care and upkeep of chickens? Food requirements, health, housing, vet care required – my local vet does care for livestock/wildlife so I will have that covered when ready.
