Donna, You will need smaller, tame chickens, that lay a decent size egg, that do not go broody at the drop of an egg. Too bad you are so far from me, I have some nice white, leghorn/white rock crosses that are nicely personable, but on the smaller size that I am not going to keep.

One other reason why I'd like "house chickens" is the unsavory element that has moved into the neighborhood if you catch my drift... it's not the nice quiet neighborhood of my youth. I'd be very uncomfortable keeping the birds outside unless I was able to supervise – not to mention the coup would need to be very secure from the foxes, coyotes and hawks that live in the area.
