Re: [CHICKENS-101] Another Newbie!

Donna, I'd avoid house chickens if you can because of the dust they make!   Unless you enjoy housework, I'd build a nice coop with a pen with a fence cover and buried fencing.

for me personally, when I'm ready, I'd like chickens that will serve multiple purposes – primarily as egg layers but I want birds that have good temperaments (friendly "pets") and nice colors as I would use shed feathers for various art projects.

This is going to sound nuts, but does anyone keep their chickens in the house?  A neighbor friend of mine told me of her set up from many years ago when she had six chickens as pets/egg laying and set up a section of the basement for keeping them.  She never mentioned issues with smell or neighbors complaining – in fact, nobody even knew she had them!  Of course this is going back twenty years or so... she didn't recall the breed but said they were friendly, she had them from young chicks, and the oldest lived to be 14.

I'm not completely clueless with birds – I had a parrot for many years and lovebirds and budgies so I know how the pecking order can be even with small cage birds.
