I'm in cold country too (below zero temps) and I've found that cochins make good birds for laying, temperament and cold weather. They're large birds (big eggs) with feathered legs, very laid back and do well in confinement. The roosters get on with each other without any serious issues although every now and again, there will be one that's a trouble maker.
Personally, I think Easter Eggers have the best eggs (and are prolific layers) and they do well in cold weather but are a bit flighty. The EE roosters are gorgeous but tend to be fighters and don't get on well with other roos, at least that's been my experience.
