Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Why not Purina

We no longer use Purina.   Purina has had too many recalls on their feed.  Recently they admitted to moldly feed that killed many chickens and ducks.  To some, chickens and ducks are just property.  To others, chickens and ducks are their beloved pets.  Yes, it can happen to anyone but when it continues to happen over and over and over, you have to take notice.

We now feed Bartlett feeds.  Nutritionally they're more sound than Purina, less recall, and their plant is more local to us.

My suggestion would be if you can find a local mill, get your feed from them.  Its cheaper, fresher, and a better deal.

The larger the company, the more issues they will have. I prefer local feed, but we have no local mill. We feed purina because it is the best we have available where we are located. Peter Pan is about the largest brand of peanut butter. We still buy it in spite of the huge recall they had. The issue was corrected. Purina works hard to avoid issues. They also do more research than the small mills. I have fed Purina since 1971 and will still feed Purina. We went with ADM Pen Pals for awhile, but the feed was not fresh and the bags were powdery. We try to buy 20 bags at a time at TSC, then store it in a cool dry place. TSC is over an hour from us, so trips are rare. We also use the Purina coupon program to save all we can save.
