Ivermectin is not given to dogs w/o incidence - it can be =deadly= to some
dogs! NO heartworm med prevents heartworm - it is used to treat heartworm
that might have infected the animal in the previous 30 - 40 days. There are
current concerns/reports of resistant strains.
In my opinion Ivermectin should not be used casually and care should be
taken that dogs do not have access to feces of animals being treated w/
Ivermectin.

However, I haven't read any *medical literature* warning against an annual
prophylactic de-worming of poultry. Ivermectin is given to dogs through out
the spring and summer months (and in some areas, it's given all year round)
to prevent heartworm infestation from mosquitoes. It's given without
incidence and remains effective year after year.
