How to raise Backyard Chickens: Re: [CHICKENS-101] Digest Number 14337

I have a beginners question: why should I buy any pelleted feed? I
feed my dog her natural diet: raw meat on the bone, with offal. I
don't trust any multi-national corporation with the health of my pets;
it seems even less wise to trust them to feed an animal that is
producing food for me.

Several of you have said that you have a local feed mill grind a custom
mix. Why can't the grains be fed whole? at least to standard size
chickens?

What sort of other foods would one add to a grain mix to balance the
diet: greens like collard and kale? meal worms or crickets? I know
chickens are omnivores...
