Good question: The standard answer is that to gather the right things in small amounts that provide the proper diet is almost impossible. This information is provided free by the big grain companies. For the most part this is true, however if you can free range chickens in an environment that provides all the good stuff they will do OK. Such places are becoming increasingly rare do to all sorts of polution some of which is provided free by big grain companies. Where I live I can let the chickens out as long as there is no snow cover. There is an abundance of green stuff, seeds of various grains and lots of bugs.
My feed will last a long time. In winter I use a lot. I buy a pelleted feed made locally because I don't trust the big feed companies.
