[CHICKENS-101] feeding greens in winter

Not sure on which group there was a question about feeding greens in winter.  Someone sent me a bunch of household "quick tips" that included this one, which I think could be made to work for poultry.

This tip was to use sections of old rain gutter as planters for herbs and lettuces.  Could be as long as convenient for your situation--I'm thinking several side-by-side in a sunny window or under a grow-light.  You'd have to close the ends somehow (in my case, would probably end up with sections of plastic held on with duct tape!) before filling with soil or planting medium and seeds--if for chickens, could be simply grass or clover seed.  I would think you could plant at intervals with some gutters just starting, some half grown, and as a gutter-ful is mature enough, put it in with the chickens for that day--something nice and fresh as a treat.

My thought would be to punch some holes along one side and run some cord or wire twisties to fasten the piece of gutter to the side of the wire run, just to hold it so they can't tip it over.  Somebody with major ambition could even fasten hooks to do the same thing.

I suppose the chickens would throw out quite a bit of the planting medium... There's always something...
