Well sorry but you are sadly wrong :-( Wild chickens are very resourceful and have been known to raid homes and 24 hour convenience stores for select canned items ....including sardines with or without oil :-) They tend to avoid larger grocery stores due to their meat departments and dumb health regulations =-O . They have even been known to leave a fresh egg or two as payment.

Obviously they wouldn't get sardines in oil, however as Jan said they might well come across fish on a beach, in shallows, etc.
On this and other sites I have frequently advocated canned fish as a protein supplement - but always in water pack and the reason for that is to control the energy.
Vegetable oils are very high in energy and when fed with the protein in what is intended to be an unbalanced situation, the desired effects of the excess protein are mostly cancelled.
