How to raise Backyard Chickens: Re: [CHICKENS-101] chicken poll

A) Black Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Cochin, and Golden Seabrights — but I want to swap out the bantam Seabrights and add Polish

B) Eggs for now, and Entertainment — down the road, possibly for meat

C) Canyon in No. Los Angeles

D) I did everything wrong

I researched chickens and followed forums for years (that was right) BUT then I walked into a feed store on a whim and bought all 11 of the 4-5 week old chicks they had. I liked that they didn't require the exacting care of the day old chicks, which I find intimidating. My BF and I are on the rocks, but it's my house and I've wanted chickens for a long time so I decided the time was right to move forward with the plan. We didn't have a coop so I bought a greenhouse and he's helping me adapt it to house birds. How well that will work, remains to be seen. The chicks are currently free-ranging in my heavily-draped guest room (which was not a part of the plan I assure you) and in that sense I think I've lost my mind. However, the chicks are a joy and I love spending time with them. The coop should be done this weekend (fingers crossed) and I hope to move them in asap thereafter. I'm also working on fencing in a run for them. Predators will be a challenge — and a learning curve I fear — as we live in an oak forest with a pretty solid canopy. Bobcats, coyotes, raccoon, owls, hawks, etc. all very common here, though off-leash dogs will probably be the biggest challenge.

DH and I have talked into long evenings about different types of chickens and what would be best for us. what I would like to know for you is: a.) what kind of chickens do you have? b.) do you keep them for meat? eggs? both? strictly entertainment? c.) where do you live (what state, province, country)? d.) why did you chose this type chicken?
