Our Amish community in Mio, MI,  take excellent care of live stock & animals.  I buy feed there and even bought a puppy once who was partially house broken and shiny with health. Must just depend on which particular person, the same as us individually.  Battery hens are often sold when molting which is why they look so bad.  Burns Eggs here in MI will not sell to the average person, I called and asked.  They sell out in huge bulks to only certain people/businesses.  Townline in Zeeland will let you have smaller orders when they clear out their pullets and hens they raised up for hatching eggs.  Again, because it is in early June, the hens and pullets are on the naked side.
