Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Battery hens

Any child being killed in a traffic accident is sad - and those who travel through Amish country should be prepared for slow moving buggies - but it isn't only people that are killed - their horses suffer horrific injuries and not just in road accidents.

And thanks for the answers to the battery hen question.  Being a Brit I use the word routinely and didnt realise that some of you Americans werent familiar with the term.

I agree with you Victoria, about the Amish.  I also dislike their treatment of women—females in general.  I have a niece and her husband has this romantic view of the Amish and I enlightened him a bit about the puppy mills, poor treatment of animals, etc.  He is in denial……..but that's ok.

Now, having said that, I don't wish them any ill will.  I live in VA and we visited southern MD on Oct. 2 for my 4 year old great nephew's birthday.  The day before, a pickup truck had slammed into the rear of an Amish buggy and a 12 year old girl was thrown out and killed.  Very sad for everyone.  Surprisingly, you don't hear of too many casualties with them sharing the roads with cars.  With the growth of the general population and traffic being what it is, it is amazing there aren't more accidents, but they generally travel the roads during the day, so I imagine that helps.
