Re: [CHICKENS-101] New hen Questions

Oh think about this before you act.  this is the same thing that happened to me.  I took in only three chickens.  they were beautiful.  One was a pullet and the mother was with her.
they almost killed the baby I had to give her back.  the other two were ok but I could not approach them they were nasty, the owner never touched them, they were angry at me.  I only have one left and she never did straighten out, she is the noisiest of any chicken I have had. She refuses to go in the coop I have to take her out for the trees sometimes to put her in, I live on a wildlife preserve and she would not last long in the low trees.  She is a beautiful bird and I love her now I would not let her go but I am sorry I took her is the first place.

When you take someone else's leftovers they become your problem.  Be careful.   Just my opinion.
I would rather start with my own little chick and train it to be friendly.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] New hen Questions

So someone has offered me 5 hens. This woman has too many and wants to thin out her flock. I don't know what they are yet, or just how old they are. But I need to know some things before even those questions.

I have 2 6 month olds, a buff Orpington, and a black Silkie. Also, 4 2 month olds, Red Stars and EE's. They all live together and get along great. If I were to take these on, how would I do it? This time of year I have no way of seperating them to help them to socialize, get used to each other. I have one coop and run and we are already in the middle of a Nor'easter her in MA. As I write I'm realizing this probably isn't a good idea, until spring, anyway.
Any thoughts?
