I keep Chickens/Ducks for several reasons; among them; they are relaxing to me; having them around gives me a reason to get out of the house even when I don't feel like it. They help control insects & perform garbage disposal service that the cats & dogs don't do; They provide entertainment.
I don't paticularly set out to have my birds for eating purposes; but I never rule it out as an option; should an emergancy popup; that causes shortage or otherwise; they are at least "meals on the feather" against starvation; plus they lay eggs which also are insurance against hunger....

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] What do chickens do for you??
I was wondering what folks on this forum have their chickens for. Obviously, everyone here loves chickens, but are they primarily pets that keep a good supply of eggs handy and occasionally become dinner? Does anyone also turn a profit on them, or get them to at least pay for themselves?
>I am wondering how to at least get chickens to pay for themselves, when I someday have them again. Do you just sell the eggs? Do you sell the culls for butcher? Or do you sell good birds to other breeders?? Or all of the above? Will just selling eggs let you break even?
I'm not sure how much it costs to feed a chicken. I'm sure its not much, but they have to be at least making more than they're eating.. right?
My boyfriend is willing to let me have my chickens. But he snorted at me saying they will just be a money pit.
Is this true? I love chickens and I will have at least a few reqardless. But if I can play my cards right and make a few dollars, then I'm happy and he's happy :)
