The smiles and love are what they do the most for us. Other than the eggs. The education they bring to the kids is another benefit. Teaching them patience and determination, caring, compassion and responsibility. We have other animals, but the chickens seem to be the critters they are most interested in, maybe because of their simplicity...or is it the egg gathering? They have taught our kids how to overcome their fears and show dominance without using physical force. I love sitting on the back porch and having them gather around for treats.
We normally don't eat our hens, haven't yet, but with the hard times that seem to lurk that option may be a necessity at one time or another. When their time comes that they are done giving eggs, then we will see about eating them, but until then, we will enjoy their company.
