[CHICKENS-101] Re: Hello-broody question

If you have the choice of getting goslings or adult geese, I'd wait till spring to get the goslings. For one thing, they're ABSOLUTELY adorable (couldn't keep my hands off them!) and for another, getting them young makes the chances of them becoming ornery much less.

I love geese, they're curious, smart and personable. They're also great 'watch dogs', anytime someone they don't recognize shows up they honk up a storm to let me know. They lay their eggs in the spring and early summer then they're done for the season. They're also good mamas and foster the wild Canada geese that I get in for rehab...very cute to watch ;)

They're messy (poop factories) so something to consider when deciding on how many you want to get. They're vegetarians (for the most part) and need grassy areas to graze on along with chow and scratch. In the winter I give them romaine lettuce.

I have Toulouse and Embden; hens only. Ganders can get nasty during laying season but calm down when the girls are done laying.
