Head of poultry, diagnostic lab, Dr. Fulton at MSU told me to use safer products that work much more effectively than DE. DE shouldn't be breathed in by man or beast. It is scientifically proven DE doesn't work once it gets wet. Well, it's wet in a crop and digestive system.
I can see the expense of using linseed oil. It works, "seals the wood", and lasts. I grew up painting roosts, dropping boards, and nests with linseed oil in my old timers grandpa's chicken coop.
I also use the barn yard, non slip, crushed lime, before I put my bedding down, every single time I clean a floor. The lime absorbs moisture, keeps odor down, isn't dusty like ag lime, and is safe.
Now it is fall I need to start white washing each pen in the main barn as I clean it. The white wash absorbs the moisture from the concrete and helps keep the bedding dry. It's well worth the bit of bother.
A friend fixed my tiller for me so I can till my pen mixture in the ground: 3 lime, 1 sulfur, 1-2 clean, dry wood ash. I measure with a horse feed scoop, carefully mix it in a wheel barrow. Put it down about the thickness of sugar on a well powdered doughnut, till it in with grass and wild bird seed.
I guess it is a matter of we both offered advice and the party will do as they wish.

However with treated wood, I really can't see the expensive of applying linseed oil.
I've read that old timers applied axle grease to roosts etc. to keep down the mites and other creepy crawlers. They also put it on their chickens legs and feet to get rid of scaly mites. I suppose it worked but it must of been rather messy.
To aid in warding off bugs, how about using diatomaceous earth?
