When it snows my silkies peer out their go outside door, then walk away. They'll take turns all day to looking out to see if the snow is still there or disappeared.
If there is no snow under their awning they'll go out and stay in the area up by the barn where there is no snow. It's really for the best that they do not like to get their feathered feet snow covered and wet. My pens would get wet too and I'd have double duty keeping them dry. When it gets bitter cold, I run a couple of heat lamps in each large pen, and one in each 5'x8' pen.

We have 10 hens, mostly Americaunas and other large breeds. They have a 10X12' gambrel roof shed as their hen house, and a 16X20' fenced run attached. (We also have a great chicken tractor we use for a few girls here and there) We're in mid-Michigan and get a decent amount of snow and cold. We throw treats out in the snow, and our girls spend a lot of time out in the run even when the snow gets deep.
We don't do any supplemental heating during the winter... UNLESS the cold gets ridiculously below 0 for days at a time. I like to give them the winters off from laying so much, so we don't supplemental light them. Our girls do great!
