I was thinking of hanging some old CDs at just barely head height for the
chickens to peck out since they're like me and have "ooooooh shiiiiiny
syndrome." I figure they won't be able to get any pieces actually off to
harm themselves with (have you ever tried to break one of those things? They
should build airplanes out of it!) I also figured it might aid with predator
control, for a while at least, too. Especially since we're going to be
trying the "Christmas light" security thing (tape off all but a half dozen
or so lights, leave red ones, 2 about an inch apart, every few
feet...supposedly predators see them as raccoon eyes and stay away) The red
lights should reflect in the CDs AND they'd be moving about so would look
'alive.' (By the way, raccoon eyes really DO glow bright red in sharp light.
The look like hot coals, very spooky.)
Any other ideas for things to entertain them? I know, most people don't
think about such silly things. They're "just chickens" after all. But, I do
a lot of animal rescue, and the saddest part for me is knowing that most of
these animals have never had anything other than occasional food and water
and zero attention/fun. I want to be sure that never happens to ANY of my
animals. Even, "just the chickens." I have a solo silkie chick in my office
at the moment....waiting to decide who to put with her....and she has a
stuffed toy to snuggle with (it has a baby heartbeat, so she's loving it!)
and she has bright marbles to peck at but can't swallow, I've caught a few
flies and put in with her to chase and a grasshopper, and she got oatmeal
with strawberries for breakfast. Good thing she isn't getting spoiled!
