Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Really would like osme help/suggestions/info!

Krista, Treat them all after testing.  Have a bleach foot bath for your shoes, change clothes and toss them in the washer when done. The Poultry Site.com offers free membership and is an excellent disease, egg development, hatching, et... poultry site. Click on the upper left hand pictures for a menu.  If you bring in more chickens, ever, they will get it too. You will need help deciding what to do from a vet.  Do NOT start meds if you are going to have a vet test so you can decide whether to treat or not, whether to cull and start over.  I am praying that I am wrong in what your chickens have, but it's definitely coryza not mycoplasma that has the odor. Coryza is bad news.

Hello Krista,

If you haven't received any suggestions yet, I would recommend going to a farm supply store. Our local Agway sells Antibiotics for poultry that you add to their water. If your coughing bird has been exposed to the rest of the flock, I would just treat them all for how ever long the package of antibiotics recommends. Usually 7 to 10 days. I've found that the people running the store were extreamly helpful in discussing the types of antibiotics to use when I treated my hen that had the maggots attached to her. They have even sold me stuff off lable that have helped my birds survive what was ailing them.

If you don't have a feed store that carries poultry antibiotics, than get on line and call Jeffer's or something like Mc Murray Hatchery. They can usually get the stuff to you within two to three days.

If she is coughing, she most likely has something going on with her respitory system. Unless she has something lodged in her throat. Open her mouth wide and look down in it.

Also, massage her throat, you never know, you may feel something. If you don't feel or see something foreign, than I personally would put her on anitibiotics ASAP.

Is it something I would do, yes. Am I crazy about the idea, of course not. But I would provide it to her, especially if she's with the rest of the flock. No one likes to use antibiotics if not needed, but in the same respect it's not harmful.

The cough is the skeleton in the closet, if contagious it can spread to the other birds. Who needs that?! The Feed Supply store or sight you contact will help you find the Antibiotic that best suits your needs.
Let us know how it goes and how you ended up treating her.
Best of luck,
Anna
