Re: [CHICKENS-101] oh, please dont turn out to be a rooster...

One of my Silkie babies started crowing at about 8-9 weeks. He is still
pretty sweet and friendly, although one of the others is looking like a
cockerel too, and although he hasn't crowed yet, he is getting very aggressive.
:-( It seems funny to me that the larger, crowing cockerel is less
aggressive than the smaller, non-crowing cockerel. They both have huge combs and
wattles. The third Silkie is half the size of the big boy, with almost no
comb or wattles, so I have high hopes she's a pullet, although she hasn't
laid an egg yet so the jury is still out! They are only about 4 months old.

Is your sweet one larger than the others? Longer legs, bigger feet? More
comb development? If so, chances are extremely high he's a cockerel and
not a crowing hen.

If they are cock a doddle doing, then you know you have cockerels.
Usually they start out sounding like squeaky hinges, then work into a full
fledged crow. The pullets will sing and it's different from a crow. 8 weeks is
young for crowing. I have had a few crow young, but 8 weeks is very
young. Must be lots of testosterone in the 8 wk old chicks.
