Re: [CHICKENS-101] cannabilism

Yikes. I've had leghorns do cannibalism like that but never my orps. RIRs did a little. Theirs happened when I was a newbie and tried out some feed that didn't have enough protein to it. With the leghorns it's a problem they have in the breed because they're so high strung. Orps shouldn't be that way. I would check their feed first to make sure they're getting enough protein then check to make sure they aren't crowded.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] cannabilism

Please forgive typos and general weirdness. The hard drive on my computer wet kaput last night and I'm using a teeny tiny loaner that is difficult to read.

What are the causes of canibalism among chickens? I started with 9 lavender orpington chicks and now have two. I had to euthanize a chick (about 4 mo old) this morning because the other chicks of the same hatch date had eaten its leg.
Thanks
Diana
