There can be several reasons for cannibalism in chickens. The most common is overcrowding. It is more common in the aggressive breed but a little surprising in Orpingtons. Excessive heat, good luck with that, could be a cause. If a chicken is wounded and bleeding the other chickens will attack it. Once the practice starts it's almost impossible to stop it.
