RE: [CHICKENS-101] Guinea and Chick question

I have heard of freezing jugs and bottles of water and leaving them out for the chickens to sit against, should they choose to.  Also, if you can put a frozen bottle in front of the fan to blow cooler air………that will cool off an area, too.  I just came in from putting out fresh cold water and ice cubes in their waterers with electrolytes added.  Electrolytes will help with the stress the heat causes.

The most important thing is shade—out of the sun and circulating air.

This heat is hard on all of us!  My alpacas and llama were sheared April 23rd and they are enjoying their buzz cuts!  They all lollygag in the barn with the fans running.  Time to put electrolytes in their water, too!

Nobody feels like doing anything.  It is so hot!

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Guinea and Chick question

Hi,

My Keets are two weeks old and have their brooder in the greenhouse.  Although, I have a big exhaust fan, two smaller circulation fans and one on a stand with the tubing that sprays water, but the temperature is still 96 degrees inside;  I don't know if they can survive this kind of heat.  It's supposed to get over 100 degrees in a couple of days, and I imagine the greenhouse will get even hotter.  Is there anything I could do to make them more comfortable?

The Hens will be 16 weeks old Saturday, and all of them are panting and trying to stay cool.  Should I be concerned with the heat, or will they find places to stay cool?  They are free to roam but staying in close to their house.  Both Keets and Chicks have plenty of fresh water.

I'd really be sad if anything happened to these babies.

Thanks

Anne H.
