Georgia, I use textured paper towels for my teeny chicks. I change it in the morning and afternoon. The older chicks paper and shredded paper. It's easy to pick up because of the newspaper on the bottom. A Clorox Two wipe is used to get the crumbs. Cathryn

Not saying your basement is damp, but lower levels tend to have damper air than upper levels, and odor particles cling to damp air making them more noticeable. Do you remove the used paper from the basement each time you change it? That helps to get it out of the house immediately. If you have a dehumidifier, run it. Or an air cleaner.

I use towels under baby chicks and change them several times a day. Roll up the new towel and lay it in one end of the tub or other enclosure. Having removed the feeders and waterers, roll up the soiled towel as you unroll the fresh one. The chicks will migrate to the 'used' end as the towel roll advances toward them so at some point you have to stop and shoo them all to the fresh end.
