Re: [CHICKENS-101] Novice Chicken mama

Well labs are bird dogs. We had one that showed no instinct whatsoever. Figured him to be just a pet. Until one day when he was tied out while we were cleaning his pen. A hen ran in front of him and he snatched her up and just held her in his mouth. He dropped her at my feet when I ran to him. She was slobbered up but the only thing hurt on her was her dignity. Thank god for his soft mouth. I wouldn't trust her though until she proves she can be trusted. All the dogs we have now have grown up with the chickens. We gave up on doing rescue 2 years ago because of a couple incidents.

By the way love your choice of breeds(except maybe the leghorn I have a few and I think they're nuts) lol

Thanks all for the advice. We ended up with Black Autralop,Buff orpington,White leghorn, (which seems to be a bully), and an ameraucana.
We have a shed that we figured we could transfer them to when they got a bit bigger. Am wondering if a coop with a heat lamp, and closed up would work too?
Our biggest obstacle right now is our Lab who is obsessed with them. She lays with her chin on the edge of the tote and watches them as if they might be a toy for her. So needless to say the door remains closed on that room unless we are in there with her. She hasn't tried anything, but not trusting her right now.
