Gina, Cocci is a protozoa that seems to infect all chickens. I'd guess that the chicks from the other breeder were less resistant and/or had a condition like a mycoplasma passed thru eggs that weakened them so the cocci killed them. I treat my chicks once a month whether they need it or not. Hunched, fluffed feathers, just a general not thrifty can be symptoms too. I need to start my chick's treatment in the morning and give it for 5 days because I have a couple with the fluffed up symptoms but no blood yet. Cathryn

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] cocci - question
Is it possible for chicks to pick up this disease from the hen through the egg? The reason I ask is that I have lost one chick yesterday and one today and another sick this afternoon that I am doctoring and all three were chicks who were hatched from eggs from another breeder. The rest of mine seem OK. I am going to treat all the chicks but was just wondering about how only those chicks got it and my chicks are fine and were hatched in the same incubator and at the same time.
They were all hatched on March 2 so they are four weeks old.
Gina :-)
