Georgia, You will want to put your rows across the the up hill garden area, not up and down it, to prevent run off of water. Do you have chickweed? That might be an idea to add to your garden for your birds. You can use scissors or hedge clippers to cut it without taking out the roots.
I use my area that gets shade part of the day and dappled sun light for a chick weed patch that I weed. I also plant my celery, lettuce, kohlrabi, on the edge of this area. This is where I put my 2nd planting of cukes too. As the sun moves with the season this area is perfect. It's also why I want to frame it in electric netting cranked up at night! I am so sick of feeding the ground hogs/woodchucks and deer. I find my chickweed my most valuable feed plant for my chickens. You cannot feed it if the plant is stressed by heat and drought, nicotinic acid concentrates in the plant. Dr. Fulton at MSU cautioned me on this.
I water my chickweed. It's high in vitamin e and other nutrients. In 3rd world countries chickweed is a diet staple too. I've seen it in the grocery store and cannot remember what they called it. I just remember that it's good for us. Cathryn

Thanks, Susan, that is really helpful. I only have a strip of land about 20 feet wide between the chicken pens and the skunk house that receives unfiltered light and that is where I am trying to garden. And it runs uphill!
