Hi Claudia
The short answer is yes. The feed companies and agricultural collates spend a lot of money doing studies on chicken nutrition to determine what is the best feed for laying eggs, breeding/maintenance, growing fryers, etc. If you feed them anything else along with, in your case, layer ration you upset the balance and won't get as good results as if you fed only the layer ration. However, if you only give them a little bit of scratch, whole corn, black Russian Oil Sunflower seeds or kitchen scraps it won't have very much impact on your hens productivity and they will be happier. And in cold weather they do benefit from some extra oil in their diet to give them warmth. Black Russian Oil Sunflower Seeds, also known as BOSS, whole corn or hen scratch will give it to them. Greens will make the yolks darker. Meat, fish, hard boiled eggs, and sour milk and yogert are all good for chickens tool.
