Re: [CHICKENS-101] Temp in coop

I am in Georgia near Atlanta and our nights are getting cool also.  Last winter and so far this year I haven't added light or heat to my coop and the chickens are doing fine.  They have a wood chicken house with a tin roof and an area outside of the house that has canvas covering on the sides that can come up in the daytime.  Some go in the house and some stay outside under the cover.  I give them warm oatmeal with their morning pellets to help get them warmed up for the day.  They come running for that treat.   Susan  in Conyers

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Temp in coop

We are starting to get some pretty cold nights here. We bought a small light this weekend and put in the coop. It has a tiny 20 watt bulb. I have it coming on about 4 in the morning. I'm worried it's not enough. The temp in the coop this morning is 31. How low is safe for them and when do I need to worry?

Thanks

Valerie in Va.
