Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Treats/feed question

My philosophy is to supplement their diet with fresh foods, since their main food is a processed grain product and they don't get to free range.  So my girls get fruit and veggie scraps from the kitchen and garden, any grubs I dig up, occasional meat scraps, plus fresh red wriggler worms from my worm bin.  At least once a week I put a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar in their water, and they seem to consider that a treat, too.  I also just recently bought them a bale of very fresh alfalfa hay and put it in their run.  They just love nibbling at the tender leaves and are slowly pulling it apart and spreading it all over the run.  The leftover stems will be excellent mulch for my garden.

What do you feed your chickens? Not only their main feed, but table scraps?
> bread? What DON'T you feed them?

I try not to let them have anything with onions or garlic. I've been told that the flavor goes into the eggs and since I sell most of mine, I'd hate to have someone complain of a weird flavor. lol
Other than that, everything else is pretty much fair game. They just got finished picking the turkey carcass & ham to bare bones!
