Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: A Stray Rooster adopted us...what should we feed him in the cold?

Yes, forget my board idea - use Gina's instead!  Get a bag of 'Scratch', which will have grains in it., to supplement his feed. The grain keeps them warmer during winter weather than just chicken feed.

So a 50# bag of layer pellets or crumbles and a 50# bag of chicken scratch, plus any kitchen veggie scraps you have. Oh, no potato in any form.  He would like bread scraps, and yogurt.  If you think he is cold, cook him a little oatmeal and feed warm.  If you have barn mice he will probably catch them.

He's a very pretty rooster.

Thank you for the suggestions!

It would be difficult to affix a board to the top of the narrow stall panel, but a towel could probably be attached with vet wrap wrapped around it to hold it in place.  Hopefully, Doodle wouldn't pick at it.  Vet wrap self adheres (tacky) without the sticky adhesive glue of duct tape.  (Vet wrap is a wide woven looking tape, often used to wrap a horse's legs.)

When the bugs and crawlies go into hibernation, what should we be feeding him?  We have a heated dog water bowl that the barn dog and cat use.  Doodle'll have access to it as well.  But, what will he eat?

Hope
